Noren are traditional Japanese fabric dividers, hung between rooms, on walls, in doorways, or in windows to enhance any space. This noren depicts Japanese Fans which symbolizes the beginning of life. The ribs of the fan stand for the roads of life going out in all directions to good fortune. Fans have also been used in Japanese Feudal warfare, perhaps the most interesting was as a signalling device. The commander would raise or lower his fan and point in different ways to issue commands to the soldiers, which would then be passed on by other forms of visible and audible signalling. Fans also have a long history of being used by actors and children in religious ceremonies.
This colorful Noren has multi-colored fans on a navy blue background. It has a split in the middle to
allowing for easier passage or viewing. The top has a close seam to insert a wooden rod or bamboo dowel for hanging. Made in Japan of 100% cotton, it measures 33" wide and 59" long.
