In ancient China, the art of Sumi-E or Japanese ink painting was an accomplishment of scholars, Buddhist priests, and painters. Similar brushes and paper were used for both writing and painting. The characters placed artfully and skillfully on the rice paper have evolved from visual symbols to more abstract over the centuries.
