Suzuri Grinding Ink Stone

E-mail this product to a friend

An inkstone in Japanese. Suzuri is literally a stone mortar for the grinding and containment of ink. Traditional ink was usually solidified into sticks for easier transport and preservation. Even a small amount of water could be applied to the end of a stick of ink, and ground with the flat surface of the ink stone. A larger quantity of ink could be ground from a small pool of water placed on the inkstone. Water was stored in a water-holding cavity on the inkstone itself, as was the case for many centuries. The water reservoir in time became an ink reservoir for later inkstones. This high quality, natural Suzuri grinding stone is made in Japan and used to make your own sumi ink. Grind a sumi ink stick on the stone and mix with plain water to produce liquid ink. It measures 4 3/4" in length and 2 1/2" wide.
