Japanese brush painting is a relatively recent development and emerged out of the Buddhist schools of calligraphy known as Shodo. The ancient art of Japanese brush painting, or sumi-e, is strikingly beautiful, simple and pure, yet strong and resonant. Closely related to Zen philosophy, the art of sumi-e is executed with black ink on white rice paper using brushes or pens. Historically brush painting has been done on hand-made paper of natural materials, with black ink, and bamboo brushes with natural bristles. Artists globally have introduced new techniques, new materials, new means of holding ink and using ink, and as well the addition of colours. Made in Japan, this high quality portable Sumi brush is ready for immediate use anywhere. It is made from the best quality sable hair and has a resilient brush tip measuring 1/5" long. The pen comes with one ink barrel and one refill. Additional refill cartridges and replacement tips are also available. The pen measures 5.5"in length and 1/4" in diameter.
