Care of Tatami Mats
Care of Tatami Mats - Tatami are a sage green when new, and over time, will dry to become a tan color. Keep tatami dry to avoid possible mildew from humidity. If you live in an area with high humidity, a de-humidifier in the room works well. The life of tatami can be lengthened if they are removed at least once quarterly and allowed to sun dry for an afternoon. A light dusting of cornstarch will freshen and protect them with a light vacuuming them along the grain for general cleaning. Rotating the mats occasionally will avoid excess wear from highly traffic areas. Tatami can last for as many as 5-15 years with proper care. Hazard Material Rating: Not available - untreated Japanese Rush Grass over dried rice straw with a black cotton fabric border. Not fire retardant.
